STOMP ROCKETS

Purpose:

  1. To determine the launch angle to give a projectile its maximum range.
  2. To have your rocket launch the furthest in the class.

Materials: PVC pipe launcher, 2-liter bottle (2 per group in case one breaks), duct tape, stopwatch, paper rocket (rolled, stapled, and fins attached), protractor, trundle wheel or measuring tape

Procedure:

1) Practice launching your rocket to make sure there are no leaks.

2) Set your launch angle at 15 degrees.

3) Measure and record the horizontal distance and time for a total of 3 trials. If trials are not consistent, repeat for 2 more additional trials.

4) Repeat this for 30, 45, 60, and 75 degree launch angles.

ANALYSIS:

1) On the computer or by hand, graph the launch angle vs AVERAGE horizontal distance. Add a trend line/curve.

2) What type of curve matches your data? _________________________________

3) What is the acceleration of the rocket while in flight? (Ignore any wind resistance) _________
