Syllabus/Rules Sheet
MAJOR STATE CONTENT AND
PERFORMANCE STANDARDS
- Newton's
laws predict the motion of most objects.
- The
laws of conservation of energy and momentum provide a way to predict and
describe the movement of objects.
- Energy
cannot be created or destroyed although in many processes energy is
transferred to the environment as heat.
- Waves
have characteristic properties that do not depend on the type of wave.
- Electric
and magnetic phenomena are related and have many practical applications.
CONCEPTUAL PHYSICS COURSE
DESCRIPTION
- Physics
is a class designed to involve you in the activities of science, rather
than have you read about science from some textbook.
- In
this class you will design and carry out experiments, carry out projects, record, organize, make interpretations of
your findings, and develop your critical thinking skills
- You
will develop an understanding of the role that physics plays in your
personal live. The knowledge and experiences in this class will
allow you to act in an informed and intelligent way when making decisions
about current issues that involve science and technology.
- This
course is a laboratory based program which satisfies the high school
graduation requirement in physical science and one year of the University
of California laboratory science entrance requirement. It is designed for
the college bound liberal arts student who does not plan to pursue a
career in science.
PHYSICS SUPPLIES:
1. Calculator with trigonometric functions
2. Ruler15 cm or longer
3. Protractor
|
4. Pens, pencils, and erasers
5. $20 lab fee - voluntary
6. 3-ring binder with lined paper
|
CLASSROOM BEHAVIOR
1. When the bell rings, students should quietly take out their materials and
begin their warm up question for the day.
2. When instructions are given, students need to listen actively. When
assignments/activities are in progress, students need to stay on task and
concentrate on the task at hand.
3.When students have individual concerns (personal problems, disagreements,
criticisms, etc.) they need to address them with the teacher discreetly or wait
until after class or after school.
4. All gum, food or drinks need to be packed away or discarded before entering the classroom.
5. Students in the class need to show courtesy and respect to each other and
to their teacher at all times.
*****6. Follow all safety rules. FAILURE TO OBSERVE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS MAY
RESULT IN IMMEDIATE DISMISSAL FROM CLASS.
TARDIES AND
ABSENCES
- You
will lose 5 points for every tardy starting with the FIRST tardy. You may
make these points up after school where 15 minutes = 1 tardy.
- You
will lose points for ALL absences, excused or unexcused.
- -10
points for excused absences
- -20
points for uncleared absences, cuts or suspensions
- You
may make these points up after school where 30 minutes = 1 absence and 15
minutes = 1 tardy.
- Each
student is responsible for making up all missed work when absent.
TESTING POLICY
- There
is to be no communication (verbal or nonverbal) between students during
the testing session. When you finish your exam/quiz, you may read a
book, work on homework, or study for another class. Any student
talking, or engaging in any other inappropriate test-taking behavior, will
receive a zero for that exam.
- It is
policy in the East Side Union High School District that instructors make
test results available to students and parents in a timely manner, up to a
maximum of 3 school days, unless so arranged between teachers and
students. It is also policy that instructors not be required to allow
students to take completed unit or final tests home but that they allow
them and/or their parents to view these tests in class or by arrangement
with the teacher. (This is to prevent sharing of tests that are given from
year to year in the same form with subsequent years students.)
- The
lowest scored test each semester will be dropped from your grade for the
semester only.
- NO
MAKE-UP TESTS WILL BE GIVEN. You may drop a missed test as your lowest
score if necessary or complete the remediation assignments and take the
retake exam after school.
STUDENT PARTICIPATION:
This course does not exist solely in a textbook. A major part of your
learning experience will occur through investigating and interacting in the
classroom. By the very nature of this course, your success depends on your DAILY participation and classroom
contributions. Because a significant portion of this course is a laboratory
experience, it can not be duplicated at home through an alternative assignment.
Consequently, there is no substitute for regular attendance and participation.
GRADING SYSTEM:
- Grades
are based on the following percentage system:
- Daily Warm Up Questions = 16%
- Labs, Projects, & Attendance = 16%
- HW = 18%
- Tests = 30%
- Final = 20%
- Minimum percentage levels: A-90% B-80% C-70% D-60% F-Less than 60%
- Although grades will be posted from time to time, you are responsible for keeping track of your own grades and totals.
- NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED!
